One of the effects of the sex craze among society now, is that it is filtering out to younger girls. As Valenti said, girls prance around with the Playboy logos on their shirts and pencil pouches not even knowing quite what it means. But it makes you think, the parents of these girls are the ones who are buying these things for their daughters. Today at work at an after school program, I was helping a junior high school girl with her homework. Her backpack fell over and there I saw Cosmopolitan magazine slip out. I asked her why she had that magazine and her response was “Because it’s awesome.” I started to think to myself, how in the world does Cosmopolitan magazine relate to a girl in junior high school? I thought they were supposed to be reading J-14 or other magazines that talked about Justin Bieber, not “77 Sex Positions in 77 Days” or “The Sure Fire Way to an Orgasm.” I am not old-fashioned, but since when are girls this young into sex when they do not know what it really means. Their perception of sex is what they see on television, on billboards, and in magazines and as the girl pointed out, they think it is cool. These may be the same girls who end up being on Girls Gone Wild because they have learned from such a young age that sex is “cool.” This also makes me wonder if girls are becoming interested in sex at this age out of curiosity or out of trying to please the opposite sex. Probably a little bit of both. The more they venture out in this popular phenomenon, the more interesting it seems and the more attention they may get. So how does this stop. Well for one how about parents stop buying sex related magazines and clothes for their children. Keeping their innocence for as long as possible (and I do not mean that innocent but sexy contradiction either) can slow down the cycle. Once being cool doesn’t refer to sex, then maybe their priorities will change.
