All you need is LOVE

In The Handmaid’s Tale there is a scene where she meets with the Commander and he asks her to play Scrabble with him. I would have expected him to want anything else other than scrabble. Maybe he wanted to have sex with her without the wife knowing or something like that; this book is so crazy they would come up with something like this. As the conversation between them goes on he pulls out a magazine from his drawer and puts it in front of her like bait. Why would he go against the law for a simple game of scrabble? They live in such a restricted world that it has come to the point where not only are the women oppressed but so are the men. They cannot share their feelings or thoughts with each other. Even though women seem like the victims in this novel I can see how the men, such as the Commander find themselves entrapped. The only time when they talk about love is when Offred talks about her past life with Luke. Every human being needs a sense to feel that they are loved. Love has driven the Commander to the point where he can no longer keep in how he feels and wants to share it with someone. Now the question becomes why has he chosen Offred? What does he see in her that he even goes to the extremes of giving her lotion and lets her look through women’s magazines? I guess we will have to keep reading :)
