Twisted Focus

The final section of the Handmaid's Tale contained the most plot twists and was arguable the best part of the book. We continue to see more into the lives of the women and men of Gilead and complexity of their every day lives. As we find out Offred and Nick are forced to have sex together by Serena so Offred will get pregnant. But Offred and Nick continue to see each other after behind Serena's back, as they continue to grow closer Offred shares more about about her life. She finds the comfort in Nick that the Commander is trying to find in her. As we find out in the end of the story, Nick really is there to help Offred and genuinely cares about her.
The beginning of the section starts with the Commander and Offred going out to a club and a hotel, as we see the Commander trying to make the life of Offred more bearable and pleasurable. The time they spend together is not something that Offred wants, when they get to the hotel she forces herself to fake the enjoyment of it for the sake of the Commander. It is interesting that the society of powerful men that focused on morality spends a great deal of time with prostitute but changes what they are called to an evening rental to justify their actions. Though the men such as the Commander have good intentions to try and protect the women and make their lives better, acting in such a way only makes the situation worse for them because the wives do not like the handmaids as a result of the men spending time with them. The society is twisted and weird because in their attempt to do good and keep everything orderly and upright, they hurt those same people. Society should be free, not controlled like in the Republic of Gilead.
