In the second half of this wonderful book we find out about the society and its name. This society Gilead is extremely restricting to both men and women. However, as usual, men have far more rights than women. They are given power in the form of the title of guardians, angels, eyes, and even commander, while women are reduced to menial labor divided into certain forms such as handmaid, house cleaner, and cook. This society even has the gall to banish facts. The word sterile is banished. The only ones to be considered infertile would be women. If women cannot bare a child they are called barren or sent to the colonies.
This reminds of label. Labels used by dictators and slave holders. These labels are designed to put people down. They degrade the ones targeted, softening them for domination, enslavement, and at times genocide. Examples of labels would be how Hitler labeled Jews as evil greedy creatures deserving of only death. An example in the United States would be racist words such chink, nigger, faggot, spic, and many more. These words of course are used to put others down. By the society of Gilead labeling women with nothing more than servant jobs, women are put down and essentially recreated as slaves. By getting rid of the fault of the men, women are put down even further. Since men have no fault in Gilead, they are essentially portrayed as gods in this society. Women are nothing more than those who serve and bear children. This use of labeling in this society has proven successful. Mind you, labeling was also successful in real life, when Hitler labeled and then exterminated the Jewish people.
