What amazes me the most about this reading was finding out that everything the creators of Gilead work to get rid of, prevent, and avoid are exactly the activities they are involved in. The women of Gilead are not allowed to be prostitutes, have sex with men other than the commander they are assigned to, or dress in clothes other than what they are given or they will be persecuted but yet the makers of Gilead created a place for exactly such things. Just like what we talked about in class, I feel like this can be related to todays society. Prostitution is illegal and scowled upon but it still exists and there are still secret places for prostitutes to go to perform pleasure for men. There are even authorities who know about these services and instead of getting rid of them, some use them for their advantage, just like the commanders of Gilead who use this secret place to take prostitutes. The whole idea of Gilead and what it is working towards is very hypocritical. In Gilead, women are never to be disrespected but the leaders of Gilead do just that; behind closed doors.
