Become Un-Oppressed

The oppression of any race, gender, sex, and so on is created by what? Is it hate is? Is it a striving for power? What causes oppression? The social constraints that oppress women are socially and economically constructed. These constraints are developed to always use men as the measuring stick. Women are measured up against men because the women will never meet that standard. It is like comparing apples and oranges, they are just not alike enough to compare. In doing this women remain inferior to men. That's where being lesbian for women frees them from the lifetime of being measured by the male expectation. As Wittig explains in her article, "for what makes a woman is a specific social relation to a man." So being lesbian breaks the mold of a woman because she is no longer considered an object controlled by man. Women are socially, economically, and historically belonging to man because of the relation that has been placed upon them. Wittig calls it "servitude" or "obligation." So the ideals of women in relation to man are in need of change, the socially accepted view of women is there dependence on a man. Which is completely false, but I think it's something that can and should be enforced through the actions of women. Showing them they are not in need of man will help to fight the socially ideals that have been reinforced into the heads of so many. The relationship between man and woman should be one of cohabitation, not one servant and master as originally constructed. Breaking the mold and standing on it will go a long way in the movement for equality amongst the oppressed.
