Changing the system

"Two sexes are not enough", was a hard essay for me to read because I could not understand why in the world the author would propose to have a five-sex system. With the readings we have done from Women's voices Feminist visions, and the discussions we have had in class regarding sex and gender, it has become very clear to me that having two-sex system is enough trouble as it is. Why would it matter if a person were to be a "herm", a "merm", or a "ferm"? The most likely thing to happen is that person will eventually lean more towards a sex and classify him/herself as a male or female.
The author also makes a note about unnecessary infant surgery. I believe that if a child were to be born with two different sexes that the parents should be able to decide what sex to make their child. If they chose to let him/her grow up with two different sexes, I don't think the child would be able to survive in the world that we live in. They would be attacked and criticized for who they are. As much as we would like to put away the racism, sexism, classism, and all the other "isms", equality will never be fully accepted in todays world. Machismo still dominates in many family homes and unfortunately it gets passed down to the children or they might just hate it that the children won't want to grow up and be like their fathers.
