Five sexes sounds interesting to me!

Anne Foster-Sterling’s article brought about an idea that had never before occurred to me; there is more than two sexes of just male and female. While male and female is seen as the norm in society, others are recognized by Sterling and she wants to make it clear that more than just two sexes should be recognized. She states, “ But if the state and legal system has an interest in maintaining only two sexes, our collective biological bodies do not.” When people are born with both man and woman genitals, that is nature taking its course, and our society does not allow such a thing to progress any further than at birth. Doctors perform immediate surgery to make the baby either all female, or all male. They even inject the babies with hormones to ensure that they will have the right mind-set that a normal boy or girl should have. Growing up, I had never been taught this before, and hearing that there really are people who are “half men half women” shocks me. I remember a few years back when there was a rumor going around that the singer Ciara was a boy because she had a penis. Even though this was false, I remember how afraid people were and how disgusting they thought it was. This shows that it is definitely not looked at as okay or normal in our society. By wanting to change two sexes to five sexes, I believe that Sterling wants to broaden the horizon of what is considered normal and show that those people are important and should be noticed as well. If they are born differently, then let them stay the way that they were intended to be. What she stated in her article of the five sexes was very brave of her to do.

  1. I totally remember hearing about Ciara being a hermaphrodite at such a young age! Great example :)
