Why do we see things based on gender?

This blog is based on the reading revolving around gender ranking found in the intro pages and the social construction of gender found on pages 142 through 145.

The writing on gender ranking hits issues of masculine traits being more valued as compared to feminine traits spot on. I also agree with the fact that gender practices often enforce inequalities. Another piece of information the article gives us is that gender even goes into classifying feminine traits of different backgrounds and skin color.

The article of social construction of gender goes on to tell us that some use gender to helps us determine male and female. It helps us to decide whether one is a man or woman. The article then gives examples of how men are viewed as superior in a gender stratified society.

The problem I find with these articles however, is that there is something missing.

Who in the world determines the differences between masculine and feminine?
Is it not just a mindset with which we can choose to either follow, go against, and or ignore?

I see a (lady/gentleman) working two jobs to feed (his/her) kid and put (himself/herself) through college.

What do I see?
Do I see a masculine (man/woman) doing hard work?
Or do I see a feminine (man/woman) doing what she can to care for her child?
According to gender rankings (he/she) is doing both.
Masculine as showed through the work and feminine as showed by the caring of the child.

Why can't we see the person in question as just an individual, a human being doing what (he/she) needs to do in order to get by in life?
