Is Five Sexes Too Many?

In Anne Fausto-Sterling’s essay, she makes the argument that the two sex system of male and female should be replaced with a five sex system. She makes a good point that our biology is different than what society is recognizing. This further shows that gender roles of masculinity and femininity are socially and culturally made. I do agree with the fact that the other three sexes are ignored in comparison to the standard male and female. However I do not agree with the fact that she says that when a child is born at birth, there should be no surgeries to change them to one gender or another. I feel this because I am sure that people who are born either female or male or both feel a sense of confusion, loneliness and un-acceptance while growing up. Since there are so few people like this is in the world, it could be challenging for a person to have to deal with such uniqueness. Parents can spare their children a lot of torment and teasing from other people. This is a parents right and I do not feel it is fair for a person to have to go through this in life if there was a way to prevent it. Even though it may not be life threatening to not change a person to one sex or another, I think that it can make a significant difference in that person’s life.
