It’s true, women are to play it safe. We need to be cautious and not to walk around alone, take that pepper spray and make sure to have our keys right away. I remember when talking to my friends about heels, how blessed we are to have them. The heels can be a weapon. A dangerous one.
In the essay, Campus Sexual Violence, it is said that Appr. 20-25 percent of college women were projected to be the victims of an attempted or completed rape during their college careers. My friend was one of them. Well, at least that’s what she believes it to be. I wasn’t quite sure what really defined Sexual Harassment. It is defined as unwelcome sexual conduct which is related to any condition of employment or evaluation of student performance. That makes sense. My friend was sexually harassed during her second year of college. She was forced and uncomforted by her boyfriend. What’s sad is, according to Valenti, women don’t even realize it! Women don’t even know if it is rape or not and some of them don’t know whether to report it. This is exactly what my friend has been going through.
She was betrayed by her boyfriend a year later and they broke up. Afterwards, she realized what she was dealing with, a form of rape by someone she knew. Of course, there is humiliation, embarrassment, but this just shows the oppression of women. How we carry this rape schedule with us. Sure, women find a way to keep those stalkers or “close companions”, away by taking defense classes, and joking about using our heals, but we are all afraid and unsafe. My other friend whose father ran away, does not trust men, and carries a huge pocket knife! I hope that this will change in the campus. Because a campus should be a safe environment, a place where the future starts and “educates” people to play it safe men and for women.
