What not to wear..

It is no surprise that once again women are held to completely different standards than men. This time it was what women wear and our new restrictions to outside the home. Women can walk around in shorts, skinny jeans, jeans bagging to their knees, tank top, short sleeve, or even shirtless and not one person would think anything wrong or judgemental about them. Somewhere in the unknown women’s handbook is a secret dress code which defines what we can and cannot wear without being called a slut. In High School, my guy friends would always have something to say about what a woman wears. Personally, I did not believe or understand anything they would say or their reasoning. One of my close guy friends believed that wearing white was a “slut” color; white jeans, white, shirt, white skirt, or anything else white. I always saw white as just white. If anything I saw white as color that represented pure or spring and summer. According to him, that white was a color that only sluts would wear cause it’s a see-through color. To me it sounds more like a personal problem rather than a rational opinion. Another classmate believed that 4-5 inch heels were considered stripper heels. Yeah, they are not super classy heels but they are fun and women should not have to be self conscious of what they wear and what they buy because men have put the connotations on things.

Another thing that bothered me when reading this article was the reasons that the court system would use to dismiss rape charge cases. There should never be a excuse or reason why it is okay to rape a women. What she wears is just that what she wears. It is not a signal that she wants to be raped it is a way of expressing her sense of style. Also, there should never be a level of seriousness when dealing with rape victims. What she does on her own time is up to here, it should not effect why she should or should not get justice for he crime committed to her. How can women feel safe and secure, when the justice system is judging them and not taking them serious? Since, when is it okay to blame a victim for their crime being committed to them?
